What are sanitary sewer overflows?
Sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) is a condition in which untreated sewage is discharged from a sanitary sewer into the environment prior to reaching sewage treatment facilities. When caused by rainfall it is also known as wet weather overflow. Frequent causes of SSO spills include:
- Blockage of sewer lines often due to grease, rags and other materials wrongfully put into the sewer lines.
- Infiltration/Inflow of excessive stormwater into sewer lines during heavy rainfall
- Malfunction of pumping station lifts or electrical power failure
- Broken sewer lines.
If you are experiencing or see a SSO please call the Franklin Water Management Department at (615) 794-4554 Mon-Fri 7am-4pm. Call (615) 791-3260 after hours, weekends and holidays.
